Welcome to A Sweeter Thing! This blog started out as a site to showcase and sell cupcakes until I decided that people who bake will bake and those who don’t bake, won’t. No matter how many recipes you give them. It’s grown over the past few years into my own online catalog of recipes, a place where I try (and sometimes fail epically!) to make new recipes for my family and friends. I’ve been on a journey I didn’t even realize I was on to make as much as I can from scratch, for no specific reason except that I love to do it and my family enjoys it. But don’t worry, this is a guilt free site. While I bake my own bread and make my own jam, rest assured that we eat a lot of Oreos and boxed mac n’ cheese.
I’m Julie, this blog’s author and resident recipe-experiment-er. My kitchen adventures are often just that, an adventure. Half the time I only have half the ingredients I need for a recipe so I improvise. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. And then we laugh and have a glass of wine. I have a background in healthcare and project management. I used to work in a hospital and I loved it! Now I stay home with my kiddos and I love that too. Sometimes I wonder if I belong back in the office but am constantly reminded that these short people won’t be short or young for very long so I’m treasuring it while I can. I tend to be pretty relaxed about some things and super uptight about others and there’s no rhyme or reason for which. I’ve known for a long time that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior but I’m constantly learning more about His grace. Every time I grasp a new understanding of it, it redefines my relationships with others and my understanding of what faith is all about.
Mr. Sweeter Thing and I met when I was 17 and got married right after my high school graduation. Don’t worry, I won’t tell your teens that story. We have been married for over 11 years and it’s been so much fun! He’s a techy guy with a gift for strategy. He’s an uh-mazing dad and the most fun person I know. After 9 years of marriage and one kiddo, we finally got the guts to uproot our little life and start a new adventure. We chose Nashville, TN as our new home and are so glad we did! We packed up our house, said good-bye to our parents and siblings and in the last two years have found an amazing church, made new friends, built a house, had another baby, and proved to ourselves that we are capable of great things when we follow our hearts and work together.
Anna is our little Sweeter Thing, our first kiddo and the silliest person we know. She has something new and interesting to say everyday. Her latest odd habit is calling me “mother” or more accurately, “muuver”. It really creeps me out, I’m ready for her to come up with something else quirky and odd.
Isaac is our tiniest Sweeter Thing, though he’s quickly outgrowing his big sister. He joined our little family in September of 2014 and has proved to be his own unique little person. He’s sweet and very perceptive of the people around him. He’s also really hungry. Seriously, the kid eats all the time.
